HTML is a markup language that web browsers use to interpret and compose text, images, and other material into visible or audible web pages. Eleven of these elements still exist in HTML 4. Except for the hyperlink tag, these were strongly influenced by SGMLguid, an in-house Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML)-based documentation format at CERN. It describes 18 elements comprising the initial, relatively simple design of HTML. HTML describes the structure of a web page semantically and originally included cues for its appearance. Web browsers receive HTML documents from a web server or from local storage and render the documents into multimedia web pages. It is often assisted by technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and scripting languages such as JavaScript. It defines the content and structure of web content. The HyperText Markup Language or HTML is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser.
